Non-surfers have probably never head of Montgomery “Buttons” Kaluhiokalani, who died Saturday from lung cancer at age 55, but wave riders will know him as one of the most naturally gifted waterman ever and a dude who was well ahead of his time. “Apart from his surfing, Kaluhiokalani was known for his sun-tinged afro (he once described himself as “half-Hawaiian, half black, a little bit Chinese”),” writes Matt Warshaw in the Encyclopedia of Surfing, “and his chattering, laughing, often manic personality.” This short video tribute, put together by EOS, will give you a small sense of his outsized approach to life and the sport.
