You Can Buy a Piece of Ski Art History With a James Niehues Original

James Niehues, the “Picasso of the Piste,” has been illustrating ski mountains for decades. His style is easily recognizable: bright, joyous images, bordering on cartoon-like, only because of Niehues’ colorful, palette. His work appears on posters behind ski rental counters, bars, snack shacks, and lovingly framed in homes. Niehues recently released a book of his images and now he’s releasing 10 original pieces of art for sale to the public. Two of them, Telluride and Snowmass, are among the most rare works in his collection. The two pieces were featured in Snow Country Magazine a quarter century ago. You can bid on them and put ’em up in your own house, but you have only a week to do it.

100% of the proceeds from those two pieces will be donated to the Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame. The auction page is here, for both the two pieces above as well as 8 others, included gorgeous sketches too.
