He Skied for 80 Years and Kept Every Ski He Ever Owned
George Raham called it his ski cellar. A room under his home in which he kept dozens, perhaps hundreds of skis, every pair the longtime ski racer has ever owned in fact, over his 80+ years of skiing. Some even date back to the early 1900s. To watch him run his hands over each pair, it’s easy to see why. Each ski seems to contain the memory of a trip past, a physical reminder of good times in beautiful places. Something a photo can’t quite touch. For a time, I kept every surfboard I ever owned, but once that blew past 20, and the threat of storage rental loomed, those memories were confined the hard drive of the mind. Raham, at 87 years old in this video, was still skiing up to 50 ski days per year. Raham’s ski cellar may have served as a kind of fountain of youth.
Raham passed away in October, and our thoughts turned to this charming CBC video of a man who simply loved to ski. And skis. The dude really loved skis.
