Poll: Which Season Do You Look Forward to the Most?

The weather flipped last week around these parts. Every year, there’s that one day where it suddenly feels like fall. The wind has a bit more edge, the sun has a bit less. Summer might come back, will come back, but this day signals that it’s only temporary, that change is in the air for good.

In the old days, when we lit our houses with whale oil lanterns and chinked the gaps in our cabins with spit and parchment, spring meant survival, warmth, and a thawing ground where we could finally dig holes to bury the dead. No wonder we celebrated May Day. But now we have radiant heat and water resistant down and those miraculous little chemical hand warmers, so every season is in play. And since that’s the case, that means spring no longer rules.

But which season do we anticipate the most? Note that we aren’t asking which season is the best–which one do we long for more than others? Which season triggers pre-stalgia, hunger, dreams? Is it fall, with its tangy melancholy and suddenly empty trails? Is it winter, when magic blankets the land and we glide on crystal carpets? Summer, when warmth soaks into our bones, we shed clothes, and the days never seem to end? Or is it still the renewal of spring that tickles the imagination?
