Melting Alpine Glacier Exposes WW1 Bunkers
While the Cop26 summit is going on in Scotland, with world leaders debating how to slow climate change, a stark reminder of warming temps is exposing century-old artifacts in the Alps.
A bunker used my Austro-Hungarian troops in the Italian Alps at Mount Scorluzzo has been exposed as the glacier it was built in recedes. Tools, lanterns, beds, even straw used for bedding has been remarkably well preserved. The troops were fighting in what’s been called the “White War,” a series of battles above 10,000 feet in elevation, often in below-freezing conditions.
❄️A melting Alpine glacier has revealed hidden WW1 tunnels and bunkers.
Historians delight in troves of lost artefacts – but have 'huge concern' about the impact of climate change on the Alpsโ 4,000 glaciers.
