What’s the Best Thing About New Snow?

Snow, children understand, is evidence of magic. Grownups like to give credit to science, to the shape of the water molecule and the pas de deux between vapor, a dust mote, and temperature, but children know that snow is simply super, natural. And inside, really, I suspect that none of us have forgotten.

Snow transforms, fascinates, energizes. It gives, it takes, it shelters. It is an industry far beyond mere recreation. And while we obsess about it in coldly rational terms – its depth, its water content, its capacity for re-entering the atmosphere in the face of a fast-moving ski tip – underneath all that is a warm emotional response. Snow triggers joy, delight, and promise. What, of that promise, do we like best?
